Leahy says he will subpoena Rove

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, said Wednesday that he will subpoena Karl Rove to appear before his panel regarding the Bush administration’s firing of eight U.S. attorneys, if the White House deputy chief of staff does not do so voluntarily.
“He can appear voluntarily if he wants,” Leahy said of Rove in an interview with CNN Anchor Wolf Blitzer. “If he doesn’t, I will subpoena him.”
Leahy added, “The attorney general said, ‘Well, there are some staff people or lower level people — I am not sure whether I want to allow them to testify or not.’ I said, ‘Frankly, Mr. attorney general, it’s not your decision, it’s mine and the committee’s.’ We will have some subpoenas.”

Senator Sununu leaps at the bait, thinking he’s so clever – he can call for AG resignation, and thereby “support” the Admin’s need to get rid of this “mistake” and also be “against” the Admin by denouncing the AG. Win the Spin game.

Campus Antiwar Movement Begins to Make Its Mark

Folks often ask, rather cynically, where are the students protesting the war? Well, the answer is that they are there-on their campuses and in the dorms-organizing speakers, rallies and teach-ins. The fact that folks off campus do not hear about these events does not mean that they aren’t occurring. What it does mean is that the media is choosing not to cover them. Here in Asheville, NC, the local SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) linked group at University of North Carolina-Asheville (UNCA) organized a counter-recruitment protest in January 2006, a walkout and march against the war last October and is now actively involved in getting students to go to the March 17th March on the Pentagon. At UNC’s Chapel Hill campus, six students were arrested on February 17, 2007 after refusing to leave Congressman David Price’s office in a protest demanding that he vote against further war funding. Meanwhile, on February 15th, students at campuses around the country held rallies and teach-ins against the war. While the movement has not reached the proportions organizers want to see, it is growing. The next student day of protest is scheduled for March 20th-three days after the March on the Pentagon. I recently connected with UNCA SDS member Kati Ketz over email. Besides her activities here in Asheville, Kati is also a spokesperson for the SDS call for the March 20th Day of Action Against the War. The exchange with Kati was an opportunity for me to learn what antiwar students have been up to and how they see the future. I share the transcript below.

NEW YORK The New York Times got the editorial ball rolling on Monday, calling for the firing of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales due largely, if not completely, to the burgeoning scandal involving the forced departure of eight U.S. attorneys. Today the notion spread across the country. “We haven’t seen a renegade U.S. Justice Department like this since John Mitchell ran it for President Nixon,” declared the Sacremento Bee. “With a new Congress beginning to exercise serious oversight, the problems at the Justice Department and with its leader, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, are becoming clearer by the day. And what is becoming most clear is that Gonzales must go.”

Embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says that he won’t resign, but his fate is out of his hands, a New York Times article reveals.
Gonzales acknowledged that “mistakes were made” in his handling of the dismissal of several U.S. Attorneys, a case that has put the nation’s chief law enforcement officer in the hot seat.
The Times article reveals that Republicans close to the Bush administration perceive “a growing rift between the White House and the attorney general,” Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Jeff Zeleny write.
“Mr. Gonzales has long been a confidant of the president but has aroused the ire of lawmakers of both parties on several issues, including the administration’s domestic eavesdropping program,” Stolberg and Zeleny continue.

Mortgage Report Rattles Markets

Dow Down 2% On a Big Rise In Delinquencies
A national survey showing that a soaring number of homeowners failed to make their mortgage payments in the last quarter of 2006 rattled lawmakers in Washington and the markets in New York yesterday, as the Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 2 percent, or nearly 243 points.
The report, which sent every major stock market indicator tumbling when it was released at noon, revealed that the problems in the market for “subprime” mortgages — loans made to home buyers with blemished credit histories — might be spilling over to the broader mortgage industry, analysts said.
While the number of risky borrowers who missed payments climbed to a four-year high, the number of foreclosures on all homes jumped to its highest level in nearly four decades, according to the survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association. Home buyers who relied on loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration also had record default rates.
